There's A Goldmine In The Sky

Well,  I'm back !! What, you didn't know I was gone ? Yeah I was, for the last thing  I wrote was back in April of 2013.Now this blog is supposed to be about gospel music and hymns but this time I would like to tell you about a different song.Oh,the name of the song you ask? the title is "There's A Goldmine In The Sky"
It first came out in 1938 in a movie called "Goldmine In The Sky" starring Gene Autry. Later in 1957 a singer by the name of Pat Boone came out with it. You may have heard of him.
At that date in time I was a mere 14 years old. Just a young lad who wanted to start going to the teen dances they had back then.Growing up in Sioux City,Iowa there were two ballrooms that held them. One place was the Shore Acres Ballroom and the other was the Top Hat Ballroom.Knowing how much I wanted to go, my mother and aunt decided that I should enroll in the Arthur Murry Dance Studio. It was with much reluctance that I went. I guess because no dance lessons,no teen dances. It was like blackmail. I didn't want to learn the foxtrot or nothing like that, my mom just wasn't with the times, at least that was what I was thinking.Wonder how many kids today think that same thing about their parents? Hold on now, that's getting away from the story so back we go.
I was so excited when my parents dropped me off. At last I was going to be part of the "in crowd." I would no longer have to listen to the other kids stories about their adventures at the teen dances. No,now I could be a part of them.
After I had been attending  the dances a few times the D-Jay started playing this Pat Boone song that just came out. The song? You guessed it "There's A Goldmine In The Sky" "Oh,this is so great" I thought. It's the perfect love song to ask this girl I had a crush on to dance with.
. Up to this point I had been a little reluctant to ask her. But now being so young and naive I knew what she must be thinking."Oh how special he must think I am for asking me to dance to such a great love song."
I just knew that must be it. Time after time whenever they played that song I would go looking for her.It was our song, the one that made her feel special.
Let's fast forward to about a year ago. I was doing the music for the monthly senior birthday party when I decided that I would add that song to the list of ones that I do there. I hadn't thought about it in years so decided I better look up the lyrics and listen to the song so I could learn it. I play by ear. While going over the lyrics I realized that when I used to dance with that girl,I had never paid attention to the lyrics, just the music, assuming it was a love song. Well much to my dismay what I found out is that it's a song about some guy and his mule! Now I wonder What was she really thinking about? Maybe telling her friends"Here comes that guy to dance to that mule song again." The one thing is the positive thought that I will cling to and that's that she really must have liked dancing with me. Oh yeah !,I'll go through the rest of my life thinking that thought Certainly can't hurt anything.  I'll leave you with my version of it on here,  which is also on YouTube along with some others. Go to You Tube type in mike rupe and they should come up.I'm no professional by any means Just something I enjoy doing. Also be fore I leave you if anyone has a gospel song or hymn that has had an affect on your life like maybe helping you through a rough period in your life or perhaps made you stop and think about something I'd be more then happy to tell your story on here along with the song. You can e-mail me at  garth_michael@gmail.com
